How to Safely Recycle Your Old Computer

John Biglin, CEO | July 21, 2014

Whether you’re getting rid of a broken computer or just upgrading, if your computer is not disposed of appropriately, it poses a threat to your security and an environmental health hazard. There are 3 ways you can get rid of your old computer in a safe manner.

1. Ask the manufacturer. Many manufacturers offer end-of-life disposal service for their products or will provide you with alternative safe removal processes. When these companies (if they do) receive your computer, they will break it down accordingly. However, be careful of where you send your computer, because some companies will ship some parts to landfills.

2. Trade it in. If you’re purchasing a brand new computer, a trade in is your best bet. Several companies like Dell, HP and Best Buy will take your old computer and recycle it for you, free of charge, if you purchase your new computer from them.

3. Do your research. There are a plethora of independent companies who specialize in recycling or disposing computer waste. Conduct your research and see if there are any local places you can go to drop it off. While most of these places do not charge for disposal, be prepared to pay depending on your computer and its condition.

Regardless, if you are depending on your vendor to remove your personal/business data from the hard drive, make sure they provide proper certification of secure data and hard drive destruction.
